The Best Beagle Food Advice

Bring on the Beagle food! Beagles love food – given half a chance they will happily over-indulge! In order to promote good health and hopefully a long life it is important that Beagles develop correct eating habits and a healthy Beagle diet. For example do you know that your Beagle is more likely to develop cancer than you? Incorrect feeding can predispose your dog to this and other conditions such as obesity, diabetes and joint problems.

Before bringing your puppy home, it would be advisable to ask your Beagle breeders what type of Beagle food your puppy has been eating. In order to avoid potential digestive problems, you will need to continue with the same. If you obtain your puppy through a Beagle adoption you should also continue with the same food initially. During the next 3-4 weeks new food can gradually be introduced– veterinarians can advise if necessary. By age one year, your puppy should be having 1-2 scheduled meals per day.

Read the ingredients of the food you are using:

Beagle puppies will thrive on 3 set-meals per day but food brands should be well-researched to ensure that healthy ingredients and high quality proteins are included. Cheap foods are likely to contribute to poor health as they contain meat by-products, fillers, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, wheat, multiple cereals, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. These are all additives that can have a negative impact on your dog’s health and exacerbate Beagle allergies and excessive Beagle shedding and fur loss.

Make sure that adequate fresh water is always available and choose a sturdy bowl!

Beagle food for an adult dog

Your adult Beagle should be fed twice a day, morning and evening. Because they love to eat it is not advisable to leave out freely available food – they won’t know when to stop! When giving a Beagle food, teach him to sit and wait calmly while you prepare his food and to obey the command “eat” when instructed.

Be consistent with meal times and remove food bowls after half an hour.

At family meal times it is hard to resist sad pleading eyes but to give in will lead to bad eating habits and jeopardize your Beagle’s health. There are some foods such as chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes that should never included in your Beagle diet as they can cause serious illness and even death.

There are many different brands of dog food on the market. As with puppy foods, only select high quality products. A home prepared Beagle diet that contains organic vegetables, chicken, meat or fish will provide a healthy alternative to commercial dog foods. Digestive enzymes, minerals, probiotics, fish oil, spirulina and B vitamins may be of benefit to your Beagle’s immune system and overall health and can be included with their food. Consult your veterinarian before using them.

All dogs love a bone and your Beagle is no exception.

Feeding a Beagle an uncooked bone will keep him happy and occupied, however, please avoid giving cooked bones as they can easily splinter and cause harm.

Beagle Exercise – 5 Ways to Have Fun

Beagle Exercise – 5 Ways to Have Fun

Beagles exercise is essential as they are lively and energetic hounds. They have a reputation as being an “eternal puppy” and have a playful and enthusiastic nature even as a senior. Exercise activity should involve socializing and engaging all of their senses, including their sense of smell.

Beagles need to sniff the ground; it’s how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued in the next yard.

Here are 5 suggestions to make Beagle exercise enjoyable for both you and your dog

#1: Your Beagle needs lots of exercise!

How much exercise does a beagle need

Aim for at least one hour of exercise each day although Beagle exercise needs vary according to your Beagle’s health and age. They are likely to remain healthy with a daily exercise schedule and a stimulating life that includes the usual running, hiking, playing fetch and walking Beagles. Also introduce fun activities such as doga, agility, doglates, Beagle training and even surfing on your favorite beach.

Beagle parents are advised to keep their dog on a leash for walks as they are prone to trailing scents or running off to chase game!

#2: Involve the kids in Beagle exercise

Beagles are well suited to children due to their gentle, playful nature and small size. Your Beagle is part of your family so allow opportunities for this little fella to join in various family activities. Dogs and children rarely tire of games such as tag and fetch and your Beagle’s stamina will be equal to that of most children! These fun family times could create treasured memories for years to come.

#3: Engage your Beagle’s sense of smell

Because of their tracking skills Beagles are used professionally such as in search-and-rescue operations, detecting gas leaks and finding lost children. Many airports worldwide use Beagles to detect drugs and contraband foodstuffs.

Beagles are born to track and will constantly be sniffing around the home.

Hide treats to make a treasure hunt, or try moving your pet’s food bowl at meal times, and your little detective will soon be on the case.

#4: Beagle exercise needs are varied and stimulating

Socialize all you can because Beagles love being around people and are extremely sociable dogs, they make one of the best therapy dog breeds. Beagle training should start as a puppy to socialize your dog and encourage good habits and communication. They are happy and friendly dogs and thus do well interacting with children in hospitals and schools, also the elderly in places such as nursing homes.  In 2008 Uno the Beagle won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, New York. He has now completed his therapy dog training and works as a therapy dog.

#5: Take part in organized Beagle exercise events

Sports such as Beagling and Tracking involve exercise that owners and their dogs can find mutually enjoyable. Puppies can be trained for these activities from as young as 12 weeks old provided their vaccinations are up to date.

Beagling involves something similar to foxhunting with the Beagles chasing the scent of hares and rabbits with the hunters following on foot.

Beagle parents can purchase animal scents and play tracking games at home – a fun way to exercise your Beagle!

Tracking involves Beagles searching in pairs or small packs. Here they are judged on how accurately they search for and find rabbits. They are ideally suited for this as they remain focused and diligent.
